Both grandmothers met each other in Lahore at a “Milad” after migrating from India. My mom from Merath, UP and dad from Aligarh in India. My ancestors have migrated from Anatolia through Iran, Afghanistan, and finally settling in Indian regions over centuries. This is why I have green eyes symbolic for Turkish and skin Persian
Milad is the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), marked by gatherings of prayer, praise, and reflection on his life and teachings. Saima Ali is the hereditary spiritual successor of four major Sufi lineages, weaving the depth of Sufi traditions into both her daily life and scientific research. Drawing strength from a family legacy of spiritual leadership and the eternal love story of her parents — symbolized by her mother’s graceful choice to embrace a shawl at her father’s tender request — she carries forward this sacred heritage with devotion and grace.
Syed Farman Ali Shah, my late dad. Born as the oldest in family and most educated and successful regardless of his inheritance. Hard working global executive who proudly served energy and telecommunications industry for decades in Pakistan and had traveled to every country around the world. My father played badminton with me and taught me how to swim by practically throwing me into an open ocean during our annual summer vacation on Karachi beaches. Ofcourse, he was right there as an expert swimmer and it took me long time to understand that he was trying to tell me how life hits you unexpectedly and you either have fight or flight reaction to it. He was building my fight or flight response from an early age.
Saima Ali’s mother was born as Jamila Khatoon and later became Mrs. Jamila Farman Ali. Saima cherishes vivid memories of her childhood, never once coming home from school without finding her mother waiting with a lovingly prepared lunch for her and her siblings — a reflection of her mother’s unwavering devotion. Saima often tells her family that if she can become even 25% of the woman her mother was, she would consider herself truly fortunate. When Saima’s daughter Maha was just twenty-six days old, her mother selflessly left her own life behind to move in and support her. In a moment of profound love and honor, Saima became the sole person, alongside a local volunteer, to give her mother her final bath — a deeply sacred act that remains one of Saima’s eternal achievements, for which she feels immense gratitude to God. Her mother, a second-grade teacher before her arranged marriage to Saima’s father, never had the chance to complete her own college education. Because of this, both her parents poured their hopes and dreams into Saima’s learning journey. In return, Saima has dedicated her life to honoring their legacy, embracing education and curiosity as the very lifeblood of her existence, with the promise to keep learning until her final breath.
